Otto’s Colourful Life

Meet Otto, an award-winning professional artist and ambassador for Uniting Local Area Coordination’s Abstract Abilities Art Competition.

Embracing his Autism, which sparks his unique creation process, Otto is making a splash in the art world. Drawing inspiration from his childhood love of pop culture, Otto’s artworks capture the magic hidden in the mundane.

Otto’s path to artistic expression has presented “trials, success and setbacks,” reflects his mother, Bernadette. Starting in 2019, his passion only grew and by 2022 his “artwork started to feel better,” Otto explained. With his family’s support, he began seeking opportunities to exhibit his art. That’s how he discovered Uniting LAC’s Abstract Abilities Art Competition.

Our popular annual competition for artists living with disability offered Otto the opportunity to exhibit his work, and he went on to make one of the Competition’s first sales!

Since then, Otto has continued to build on his success. “Otto Van De Wijgaart creates artworks as unique as he is – colourful, clever and above all, joyful,” reported NBN News.

Today, the young artist is in demand for commissioned pieces. His distinctive art is displayed at the Mitch Revs Gallery in Newcastle, and most recently was part of the Terrace Reflections display in Raymond Terrace throughout December 2024 and January 2025.

“Otto’s art is a conversation starter because it’s so creative, detailed and fun. It’s brought a lot of joy and excitement to the community,” said Leah Anderson, Mayor of Port Stephens, where Otto painted a mural that showcases a tapestry of characters and personalities in a “Guess who?” format.

Pouring his passion and unique voice into his artworks, Otto shares his colourful perception of life and continues to cement his place within the art community.

“I’m very proud of myself,” he sums up.

With each swipe of his pen, Otto invites us to see the world anew, leaving a bright mark on the canvas of our imagination. We can’t wait to see what he achieves next.
